Just came into my head a sec ago.
It's just, you see the "HUD" theme all over for loads of apps and stuff, and I just thought, where did it originate from?

My dad said the military invented it... I know they use it, but I didn't realize they invented it. And after some research I found that it seems to be true. Heads Up Display (HUD) was used to show things in front of you without blocking your view. That's why it has transparency. thumbs up

Uh... I believe I was responding to the question: "where did it originate from?" :sarcastic:
All apple did was modify and use the technology that already existed.

lol @ you going through all that... I know the difference between:
a. Photo 1 - Heads Up Display (HUD) mode
and
b. Photo 2 - a developer making the palettes of an application appear in Heads Up Display (HUD) mode or a skinner making objects on their desktop appear in Heads Up Display (HUD) mode

Even still, there really is no Heads Up Display (HUD) "theme", thus the theme didn't originate from anywhere - only people copying the Heads Up Display (HUD) style, which has been around from ages.

Also, fyi, that's not the only style of Heads Up Display (HUD) that they (the military) use. There are ultra transparent and semi-transparent. Which is what gives the appearance of a partially opaque gray background.
This is the style that is most copied by developers and skinners.

notice i used the word style... if u can show me when the military used the STYLE that people apply to image veiwers, CAD ect then ill give u the gold but untill then, the style was some creative guy with good taste, and the HUD Display for aircraft ect was the military

lol...you can keep "the gold". alxm, I dunno how i could show you. I can just tell you that for example they have radar screens with the regular black background view and a layer over that with the Heads Up Display (HUD), where you can switch between different views, like red, green, gray, and blue, and still allow you to see the background because it's semi-opacity. and of course the clear one where there is no background. You can change the style with a knob on the console or through the menu.
oh i was referring to when you said "thats the name not the actual theme...." smile

aside from that, I'll just say that I'm not trying to have a negative and unnecessary debate, I understand that you are talking about Heads Up Display (HUD) style that people use on their computer. but again, as I said I was answering the question proposed by the topic starter: "where did it originate from?" thumbs up
