According to a report in The Financial Manager, Apple could start too offer Napster style unlimited iTunes access. Currently Apple is negotiating with several large record companies about a deal that would let the user pay one price access to the whole music catalog. This would make the iTunes Store about the same as Napster and Rhapsody. In the end, Apple is hopeing that the deal would allow Apple customers to buy their products at special premium rates where all the extra money would be directed towards Apple paying the record companies for the music.
An anonymous Apple executive who has been involved in many of the discussions involving this deal stated that Apple offered a mere $20 extra while Nokia has offered nearly four times as much for the same deal. Apple did not comment.
This is the latest news in a series of events that show the musics industry struggle too make up profit lost due to the increas in digital piracy. This deal reflects the same as some Hollywood comapnies deals with rental companies like Netflix and Blockbuster for unlimited rental for premium rates.
With Apple having sold just over 4 million iPhones in only six months, that is a rate of twenty thousand a day, Jobs said that iPhone users are more likely to access internet music because the iPhone is a media/internet/phone device that connects people to the three realms that are most used today. According to Apple, which recently updated the iPod firmware to automatically show lyrics if they are available (iTunes Store is now set to start selling the music with the lyrics included), since opening the iTunes store has sold over 4 billion songs to people in over 5000 countries. It seems as though the iTunes store will just keep getting better and better. And who knows? Apple might be able to stop piracy if they can get this premium rate going. That's all for now. More too come tommorow!
